6/10/2023 0 Comments Against empathy![]() This may seem pedantic, but my quibble was substantive: when we speak of empathizing with another person, we refer to gaining a deeper understanding of their situation, their emotional state of mind, ‘spending a day in their shoes’. Such is my passion that I once sat down a close friend of mine (you can imagine her patience) and attempted to sketch out the old sympathy-empathy divide on a graph. ![]() ![]() At only 24, Sophie Kinsella, then known as Madeleine Wickham, wrote her first novel titled The Tennis Party. Her first creations came early when she was still a journalist. She later worked in various firms including Pension World as a financial journalist before resorting to fictional writing. She began by studying music before changing after her first year to PPE (politics, philosophy and economics). Having gone through two different independent senior schools, she finally landed in the University of Oxford. Looking at her book profile, one may think she studied the art which is actually not the case. She has several others and is still writing more. Sophie Kinsella, born Madeleine Sophie Wickham, is a common name that arises every time British novelists are mentioned. ![]() ![]() ![]() The film is beautifully shot and artfully narrated, depicting Slocum's life as a runaway teen, a sea captain in the days of square riggers, a loving husband and father, an outrunner of pirates, outsmarter of natives, and the original "roughin' it" type travel writer. Rowe's documentary fleshes out this independant yankee sailor, following his life from his birth in Nova Scotia- to his ultimate mysterious disappearance post-circumnavigation in 1909.
